Phaladīpikā 12.22 · measured on 10,000 charts
Does a serpent's curse block your children? What the verse actually says
Phaladipika 12.22 asks for two things at once — Rahu in the 5th AND the 5th lord with it. Measured on 10,000 charts: about 0.7% qualify. Read loosely, about 39% do.
Almost certainly not. We measured it: on ten thousand real birth charts, the condition Phaladīpikā actually states is met by about 0.7% of people — roughly one in a hundred and forty. Read the way it is usually sold, the same sentence catches about 39%. Two in five.
That gap is not a difference of opinion between astrologers. It is one Sanskrit word.
The sentence
स्वर्भानौ सुतगे सुतेशसहिते सर्पस्य शापात्तथा
Rāhu in the fifth, together with the lord of the fifth — then, by a serpent's curse.
Phaladīpikā, chapter 12, śloka 22. The chapter is titled पुत्र भावफल, the results of the house of children, and it is where this claim comes from.
The verse names two conditions and joins them:
- सुतगे — Rāhu placed in the fifth house
- सुतेशसहिते — and the lord of the fifth house there with it
Both. Not either. The compound सहित means accompanied by; it is not an alternative, and the verse offers no second route.
What gets dropped
Most readings keep the first word and lose the second. The Hindi commentary printed alongside this very śloka already loosens it — "यदि राहु पंचम में हो या पंचमेश को दूषित करता हो", if Rāhu is in the fifth or afflicts the lord of the fifth — turning a conjunction into an alternative. Once that door is open, "afflicts" widens further with each retelling, until Rāhu merely aspecting the fifth lord from across the chart is enough.
So we counted. Same rule, same ten thousand charts, the only difference being how the sentence is read:
| Reading | People it applies to |
|---|---|
| The verse as written — Rāhu in the 5th with its lord | about 0.7% |
| The loose reading — in the 5th or afflicting its lord | about 39% |
About fifty times wider. If you have ever been told you carry a serpent's curse, those are the odds that the sentence being quoted at you does not say what it is being made to say.
How to check this rather than believe it
The numbers above are not an assertion. The script that produced them is committed
in our repository as scripts/sarpa_shapa_rate.py, with a fixed seed, so it
runs to the same result every time. It builds ten thousand charts across six decades,
ten Indian cities and every hour of the day, and counts both readings side by side.
Across three different seeds it lands between 0.66% and 0.75% for the verse, and
between 38.4% and 39.1% for the loose reading — which is why this article says "about"
rather than printing a decimal it has not earned.
The verse itself you can check in any printed Phaladīpikā, chapter 12, śloka 22.
What the rest of the śloka says
The same sentence continues past Rāhu, and the other agents each carry their own condition. Ketu in that place points to a brāhmaṇa's curse; Gulika to a curse arising from a preta; Venus and the Moon together with Gulika to the killing of a cow or a young woman in a former birth. Ketu or Jupiter with Gulika points to deva-hatyā. We mention them because a verse quoted in half is how this started.
What we are not saying
We are not saying serpent-curse readings are invented. The verse is real, it is old, and a small number of charts do meet it exactly as written. We are saying that the condition is narrow, that it is routinely widened, and that the widening is what makes it saleable.
And if your chart does meet it, we do not sell anything against it. No stone, no ritual, no package. A verse has described a placement, and that is the whole of what has happened.
