Why your Abhijit muhūrat is not the one in the almanac

What the text actually says
Abhijit is defined plainly, and not in the book most sites name for it:
"The mid-day goes under the name of Abhijit and is considered as very auspicious for all work. It cuts away all evils. Abhijit sarva doshaghnam." Jaimini Sūtras, B. S. Rao 1955 — the commentator's notes to Sū. 27
The arithmetic behind it comes from the day-division rule: २ घड़ी का एक मुहूर्त होता है। पूरे दिन के १५ मुहूर्त। — one muhūrta is two ghaṭī, and the day holds fifteen of them; and, the same passage adds, दिनमान तथा रात्रिमान के न्यूनाधिक होने से मूहर्त काल की २ घड़ी में भी न्यूनाधिकता होती है — as day-length varies, so does the length of a muhūrta.
So a muhūrta is not 48 fixed minutes. It is one-fifteenth of your daylight, and Abhijit is the one straddling your local noon.
Which is why it moves 63 minutes across one country
India runs on a single time zone spanning about 29 degrees of longitude. Solar noon does not care. Computed for 1 June 2026, all times IST:

Kolkata finishes at 11:58. Ahmedabad starts at 12:13. The two windows never overlap. A single "today's Abhijit" printed for the whole country is simply the wrong answer for most of it.
And it barely moves with the season
This surprises people who expect a summer and winter version. Run the same six cities on 21 December — the shortest day of the year — and every one of them lands within a minute of its June value. Kolkata 11:10 both times. Delhi 11:55 both times. Mumbai 12:12 both times.
Sunrise moved by more than an hour between those dates; Abhijit did not. Because it is pinned to the midpoint of the day, not to its start, and the midpoint moves only with the equation of time — minutes, not hours. Your Abhijit is a fact about your longitude, not about the calendar.
The half nobody mentions: it can be blemished
Abhijit is not automatically clear. The durmuhūrta reckoning assigns inauspicious muhūrta slots by weekday, and on some weekdays a durmuhūrta falls on the Abhijit slot itself. Through June 2026 for Delhi, that is every Monday and every Wednesday.
On those days our own page was, until this week, offering 11:55–12:43 as "today's window to seize, good for almost any beginning" — while the same page's durmuhūrta list marked that exact window inauspicious. It now says so and stops offering it.
We looked for a verse behind the widely repeated rule that Abhijit is void on Wednesday. We could not find one in our library, so we assert none. What we do instead is read our own two computed values and refuse to contradict ourselves.
Two things we got wrong, and fixed
We cited the wrong book. This page used to print "Cited: Muhūrta-Chintāmaṇi" under the Abhijit window. Our copies of Muhūrta Cintāmaṇi contain the word अभिजित् five times and every one is Abhijit the nakṣatra — the deity lists, the nakṣatra shapes, the laghu-kṣipra group. None defines a midday muhūrta. Durmuhūrta does not appear in them at all. The citation is now the Jaimini Sūtras line above, which does say it.
And the window itself was twelve hours out. One of our engines built its sunrise from the UT calendar date, so a sunrise falling before midnight UT — which in Delhi means most of the summer, and in Kolkata much more of the year — came back stamped on the previous day. The "day" then ran 38 hours and its midpoint landed at 11:54 PM. Abhijit is by definition a midday window; ours was pointing at midnight. Fixed, and now checked against the invariant that defines it: the centre of the window must equal the midpoint of sunrise and sunset, to the minute, in every city and every season.
A note on which sunrise
Even the correct answer has a small fork in it. "Sunrise" is not one definition, and disc-centre runs one to two minutes later than the upper limb. We use upper limb with atmospheric refraction, because that is what the Indian pañcāṅga tradition uses and what DrikPanchang matches. Three of our own endpoints were quietly using disc-centre instead; they now import the same constant as everything else, so the whole site reports one sunrise rather than two.
What to do with all this
Use an Abhijit computed for your own place. On the evidence above, a window taken from a national almanac can be a full hour wrong for you — long enough to miss it entirely. And on Mondays and Wednesdays, check whether it is blemished before you rely on it.
If a site gives you an Abhijit without asking where you are, it has not computed yours. It cannot have.
